What is Gua Sha and How Can you Achieve a Natural Face-Lift Effect?

Facial gua sha is a healing meditative practice.
Facial gua sha is a healing meditative practice.

At the Healing Tree we believe in using time-tested methods that not only work but are also sustainable and good for your health. Gua Sha, which literally translates to “scraping sand,” is a healing technique from traditional East Asian medicine. It involves using a smooth-edged tool to apply pressure and scrape the skin, promoting better circulation, releasing tension, and enhancing the body's natural healing processes.

Gua sha originates from China and East Asian cultures. Traditionally, it was used by healers to treat a number of complaints ranging from muscle pain and fevers to digestive disorders. Gua Sha has its roots in Chinese medicine which emphasises the importance of qi (life force) in the body and blood flow in maintaining heath.

Why is this ancient technique suddenly so popular?

Modern adaptations of gua sha, such as the Graston Technique used by chiropractors, have led to a rise in the popularity of the practice as they have validated its effectiveness. One of the most talked about uses of gua sha in recent years is facial rejuvenation- the results have made it extremely popular. It reduces puffiness, promotes collagen production and enhances skin elasticity, providing a natural non-surgical facelift effect.

What are the benefits of an at-home gua sha treatment?

When done correctly, gua sha can offer both immediate and accumulative results, boosting lymphatic drainage, toning and smoothing the face and reducing fine lines and wrinkles as well as dark circles. It is a simple practice that can be done daily wherever and whenever is most convenient for you making it an affordable and practical alternative to spa facials.

The best way for me to explain how gua sha works is to show you. Check out my video below to see the gua sha ritual that I use to maintain a healthy complexion. By combining facial acupressure with gua sha you can really get the most out of your practice: stimulating the acupressure channels helps to increase blood flow to the skin, skin renewal and collagen production.

Before you start your gua sha practice always remember to wash your face and apply some moisturiser before applying a few drops of your favourite face oil... and enjoy!
